Table 1-3 Organized Christianity: Global totals in 1995 AD

Note: Denomination is defined as an organization within a single country. This means that if the Roman Catholic church is in 234 countries, it would have a at least 234 denominations. Conversely, To say the Roman Catholic church has 239 denominations in 234 countries, is a conclusion that seriously misreads the data. On the other hand, the fact that there are 8848 denominations in the Protestant column, does not mean there are 8848 Protestant denominations as Catholics suggest. If you divide 8848 by the 237 countries, you come up with a figure of only actual 37 denominations in 237 countries.

Mega-bloc Denominations in 1995 countries
Roman Catholic 239 234
Orthodox 764 133
Protestant 8848 231
Anglicans 168 162
Marginal 1,488 215
Independent 21,582 220
Total 33,089 237

Table 1-5 Organized Christianity: global membership ranked by 6 major ecciesiastico-cultural megablocs and 300 major traditions, AD 1970-2025

a. This table is derived from the 238 Country Tables 2 in Part 4 “Countries” for all countries.

b. All figures are given to the last digit In order that totals here, and in all other tables, shall add up exactly. When quoting any aggregate or global figures in these tables, therefore, they should be rounded, either to the nearest thousand, or ten thousand, or 0.1%, or 1% as may be appropriate to the reader’s requirements.

c. Meaning of columns.

1. Ecclesiastical bloc. On these 6 lines are given the global statistical totals applicable to each bloc, and also, at the end of the table, for global church membership.

1-2. Ecclesiastical tradition. Under each of the 6 blocs are specified each’s major constituent ecclesiastical traditions, listed In their codes’ alphabetical order. First comes the 3-letter code as used in Tables 2, then the full name of each tradition. At the end of each listing for a bloc, the line ‘Other’ (whose code In Tables 2 Is a blank space) then sums any smaller residual, aggregate or unspecified traditions in that bloc.

3-4. Congregations (worship centers) and adult church members (all referring to the year 1995). These two columns are totals derived directly by addition from columns in Country Tables 2 far all countries..

5-6. Affiliated church members (total Christian community) In 1970 and 1995.

7-12. denominations: A denomination Is dented in this Encyclopedia as organized aggregate of worship centers or congregations of similar ecclesiastical tradition within a specific country. i.e as an organized Christian church or tradition or group or community of believers within a specific country, whose component core and members are called by the same denominational name in different areas, as one autonomous Christian church distinct from other denominations, churches and traditions. As defined here, world Christianity consists of 6 major ecclesiastical traditions divided into 300 major ecclesiastical traditions, composed of over 33. 000 distinct denominations in 230 countries, these denominations themselves being composed of over 3,400.000 worship centers, churches or congregations.
